Dr. Dopheide received a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Nebraska and completed a residency in psychiatric pharmacy practice at the University of Southern California. She has been on the faculty of USC's School of Pharmacy since 1991 and the Keck School of Medicine since 1998. Julie is the PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency program director, and has an ongoing practice in adult and pediatric psychiatry while teaching pharmacy students, medical students and psychiatry residents in didactic and clinical settings. She is also a member of the Pediatric Psychotropic Guidelines Development team for Los Angeles County. As President, Julie plans to “work with the membership to keep CPNP's momentum strong by encouraging continued involvement of past leaders and by welcoming and mentoring new practitioners and new leaders.”

Dr. Burghart joined CPNP in 2000 and has served as Board Treasurer and committee member. He currently serves as Chair of the Specialty Council on Psychiatric Pharmacy at the Board of Pharmacy Specialties concluding his term on the council in 2013. Steve served for a number of years on the Board of the Kansas Pharmacists Association and was the 2003 recipient of the Harold N. Godwin Lecture award from the Kansas Society of Health System Pharmacists. He notes, “The future of the association and the specialty is exciting because it is filled with both tremendous opportunities and significant challenges.”

Dr. Lott has practiced and taught psychiatric and neurologic pharmacy for over 35 years. After earning a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Washington State University in 1972, he became an Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy there. Rex earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota in 1977. Since 1997 he has been a full-time faculty member with Idaho State University with a practice in psychiatric pharmacy at the Boise, Idaho VA Medical Center. According to Rex, “In just 16 years, our organization has become a healthy, well-recognized resource for those who practice, teach and perform research in the areas of psychiatric and neurologic pharmacy.”

Dr. Elliott has been a clinical psychiatric pharmacist at the Center for Behavioral Medicine, a state psychiatric facility in Kansas City, Missouri and the PGY-2 psychiatric residency director for approximately five years. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy. From 2005 to 2007 she was the Director of Pharmacy at Two Rivers Psychiatric Hospital, a private for-profit facility in Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to that, Ellie was employed for six years as a clinical psychiatric pharmacist at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, a private community hospital in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. She completed a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and subsequently completed psychiatric residency training at Western Missouri Mental Health Center in Kansas City, Missouri from 1998 to 1999. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center School of Pharmacy in Omaha, Nebraska in 1997. Ellie serves on the CPNP Board because CPNP has “been a significant contributor to my professional growth over the past twelve years and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to give back to the organization.”

Dr. Thomas joined CPNP in 1999 as a pharmacy student, and has been actively involved in the organization in a variety of capacities. He has been in the field of psychiatric pharmacy for 13 years. He earned a Doctor of Pharmacy from Butler University in 2000 and completed a Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency at the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in 2001. Upon completing residency training, Chris joined the Chillicothe VAMC. The Chillicothe VAMC serves veterans from Southern Ohio, Western West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. Chris believes “CPNP plays a vital role in developing the future practice of psychiatric and neurologic pharmacists. Because we are a member driven, membered focused organization, I believe we have boundless opportunities as a profession to enhance the health care of patients suffering from mental illness.”

Dr. Love is a founding member of CPNP and one of the committee chairs of the original Board of Pharmacy Specialties petition for recognition of Psychiatric Pharmacists. Ray earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1977. He has served as a psychiatric clinical pharmacist, area health education director (AHEC) director, residency director, director of pharmacy, state mental health pharmacy program director and associate dean. His experiences have included both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric practice in rural as well as urban settings. Ray established the first ASHP accredited residency clinical residency at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, one of the first statewide clozapine monitoring programs, a statewide program to address antipsychotic use in children and the University's Mental Health Pharmacy Program which furnishes services to five state psychiatric hospitals and Maryland Medicaid. Ray elaborates on his view of CPNP: “Our membership is active clinically, administratively, educationally and in advocacy and policy development. We have done a superb job in programming, education, recertification activities and liaising with other groups and are poised to continue this excellent work.”

Dr. Moore received a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of New Mexico in 2003 and a Masters of Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. Troy completed two years of psychiatric pharmacy residency in 2005 at the San Antonio State Hospital and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. He is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Psychiatry at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in the Substance Abuse and the Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Programs. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) College of Pharmacy. According to Troy, “CPNP plays a vital role in advancement of the practice of psychiatric and neurologic pharmacists and supports our educational needs, professional interests, knowledge obtainment, and research efforts.”

As Executive Director to CPNP, Brenda Schimenti serves an ex-officio appointment to the Board of Directors. She also serves as Secretary to the CPNP Foundation Board. Brenda holds her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska and her Masters in Adult Education from Drake University. She has been Executive Director of CPNP for 12 years and with staffers Greg Payne and Vanessa Wasser, is responsible for management of your association. “I know I speak for all of the CPNP staffers when saying that we enjoy working with such a dedicated association of professionals who are committed and passionate about improving care for those living with mental illness,” says Brenda. “Thank you for the opportunity to work alongside you toward this goal.”
CPNP FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD MEMBERS
Joining the CPNP Foundation (CPNPF) Board of Directors is Melody Ryan, Roger Sommi and Rex Lott. Dr. Lott, Pharm.D., BCPP, joins the Board for a 1-year period as CPNP's liaison to ensure ongoing dialogue and partnership between CPNP and CPNPF as affiliated organizations. Immediate Past President of CPNP, Lott is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Idaho State University-College of Pharmacy with a practice site at the Boise VA Medical Center. Dr. Lott replaces Dr. Jerry McKee, Pharm.D., BCPP and Regional Dean of Wingate University, whose term on the CPNP Board recently concluded.
Melody Ryan, Pharm.D., MPH, CGP, BCPS received her Pharm.D. and Masters of Public Health degrees from the University of Kentucky. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at Duke University and a neurosciences fellowship at the University of Kentucky. She holds appointments as Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science and at the College of Medicine, Department of Neurology at the University of Kentucky. Her practice site is the neurology clinic at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. She is the Director of International Professional Student Education at the College of Pharmacy. Dr. Ryan also serves on the Medicare Model Guidelines Expert Panel for the United States Pharmacopeia and is president-elect of the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science.
Dr. Ryan became a founding member of CPNP (affiliated with the Foundation) with the belief that neurology and psychiatry have common interests. She continues to strive to be sure that neurology practitioners are included in the College's programming and focus. With this in mind, she was pleased to become part of the CPNP Foundation Board of Directors. “Although neurology-focused pharmacists are a small group within CPNP, initiatives by the Foundation can increase interest and participation in the College among them,” she said. “Bringing enthusiastic and focused practitioners together to work to promote the aims of the Foundation is an exciting opportunity.”
Roger Sommi, Pharm.D., BCPP, FCCP, is Professor at the UMKC School of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacy Practice, with a cross appointment in the Department of Psychiatry in the UMKC School of Medicine. He is also Research Director and Residency Preceptor at the Psychopharmacy Research and Education Program at the Center for Behavioral Medicine (formerly Western Missouri Mental Health Center).
He received his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Utah, Residency in Hospital Pharmacy at the University of Utah Hospital and Fellowship in Psychopharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin. He is board certified in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties, and is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
His area of research interest is primarily in outcomes associated with drug treatment of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. Dr. Sommi is a founding member and Past President of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists. Dr. Sommi is actively involved with the local NAMI chapter in the Crisis Intervention Team training program. He is also a consultant to several community mental health centers in Kansas City and Missouri.
Dr. Sommi is “honored to be selected to the Board of the CPNP Foundation. I am excited to be a part of the evolving role of the Foundation and am hopeful that we can make an impact on delivery of care and in advancing the role of pharmacists in patient care.”

Once you select any CPNP University Course, the presentation will always be available to you through your My CPNP page even after the ACPE eligibility has expired.
ACCP-CPNP MEDICARE INITIATIVE

ACCP and CPNP have released two important resources related to our ongoing campaign to seek legislative changes to relevant sections of the Social Security Act that would recognize the direct patient care services of qualified clinical pharmacists as a covered benefit under the Medicare program.
1. Medicare Initiative Congressional Issue Brief
This two-page overview of the initiative was developed to help members of Congress and congressional staff understand the following:

Why a comprehensive medication management (CMM) benefit would improve care for Medicare beneficiaries and why this benefit belongs under Part B of the Medicare program

The process of care that constitutes CMM
-
The definition of a “qualified clinical pharmacist”
-
The action needed from Congress

2. Medicare Initiative Data Document
This fact sheet includes aggregated results from 19 distinct medication management service practices, provided by qualified pharmacists within settings such as community-based pharmacies, hospital-based clinics, freestanding medical clinics, and health systems. In all cases, a consistent and comprehensive process of care was used in service provision. Data reflect 11,804 patients (older than age 65) with 21,213 documented encounters.
Based on these data, ACCP projects that providing Part B coverage for CMM services could help the Medicare program avoid:

Almost 6 million physician office visits, saving more than $1 billion annually

670,000 emergency department visits, saving more than $500 million annually

CPNP Members and especially Key Contacts are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these two documents to help guide our grassroots communications with Congress related to the initiative. This will help ensure we deliver a consistent and coherent message around how CMM helps “get the medications right” and why Congress should enact legislation to achieve CMM coverage.
Legislative Strategy
With CPNP input, ACCP and the consultant from the Federal Group are leading the effort to identify legislative champions on Capitol Hill who will be committed to introducing legislation on behalf of our coalition, and working with us to advance it and move it through the legislative process. Meetings are being scheduled with congressional offices to familiarize lawmakers with the Medicare initiative concept and explain why it constitutes good policy. Through this process, we hope to identify a champion to introduce the bill as well as develop a list of potential original cosponsors. Ideally, our goal is to secure a bipartisan introduction of legislation, with a Republican lead sponsor and a Democratic original cosponsor in the House and both sponsors on a committee of jurisdiction. With Democratic control in the Senate, we will seek the reverse in that chamber – a Democratic sponsor and a Republican original cosponsor.
Congressional committees with jurisdiction over the Medicare program are the Ways and Means Committee and the Energy and Commerce Committee in the House of Representatives and the Finance Committee in the Senate. Our goal is to identify legislative champions in the House and Senate who sit on these influential committees and who will accordingly be best placed to advance our initiative.

Congratulations!
Eric C. Kutscher, Pharm.D., BCPP, FASHP, has accepted a new position as the Assistant Director of Pharmacy, Clinical Services. The position will be fully funded by the University of Arizona Health Network. This position was created to help continue develop the clinical pharmacy services that has been provided by the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and University of Arizona Medical Center over the last 20+ years. Overall, Dr. Kutscher will be in charge of creating and leading the vision for the future of clinical pharmacy at the University of Arizona. In addition, he will retain his academic title with the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.
Carla Cobb, Pharm.D., BCPP, has won The Bowl of Hygeia. The Bowl of Hygeia is an impressive accomplishment awarded by the Montana Pharmacy Association.
Jose Rey, Pharm.D., MS, BCPP, is profiled in this month's Pharmacy Today.
Gary M. Levin, Pharm.D., BCPP, FCCP, has accepted a new position as Vice-President of Educational Affairs and Chief Academic Officer for Larkin Community Hospital in South Miami, FL. Dr. Levin will oversee 30 DO and MD residency and fellowship programs (many of which are in psychiatry). In addition, he will be the Founding Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Larkin University of Health Sciences, which anticipates beginning the first class of students in August 2015.
Vanessa Wasser, CPNP Event & Membership Coordinator, was married June 13 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
